As you will begin to notice with my cheat day favorites, most of them are breakfast/cafe places. Most of my cheat day splurges are going out to breakfast because to me there is nothing like some good coffee, a pastry or scone, and a stack of pancakes or delicious egg dish. Breakfast has the most delicious dishes in my opinion and it is such a relaxing meal that I like to enjoy it on a Sunday morning when I’m preparing for a new week.
It was several years ago after I vacationed in New York and experienced numerous hole-in-the-wall cafes there, that I thought to myself, here you have lived in Madison your whole life and never searched for its hidden gems. Ever since then I have attempted to try a new place every Sunday or so. One important thing to note as well is that I don’t just go to the place for its food, but also its atmosphere. The atmosphere of a cafe is so important and can be what draws people in! I love cafes that are local, cozy, and unique in its own way. Well this cafe I am about to share with you all is definitely all of that!
I can’t remember how exactly I found out about Sophia’s, but usually I find out about places from searching online or driving by them randomly. Sophia’s is definitely one of those places that you would drive by if you didn’t know it existed. It is i located on the first floor of a house, and is tucked between all the other houses on the street. Sophia’s is small and a little cramped, yet homey. It is family style seating, meaning you are sitting next to people you may not know. I was a little ehh at first too if that is what you’re thinking, but you actually still have privacy and the people around you are friendly, yet doing there own thing at the same time. You can see them make all the food behind the counter and your eyes are instantly fixed on the muffin pans of fresh pastries, fresh fruit, and the different kitchen ware hanging from the walls. My mom and I have been back numerous times since, but the first time we went I ordered coffee and the Croissant French Toast with raspberry compote and my mom got tea and the Apple Pancakes. For the hot beverages you go up front and choose from a variety of un-matching, yet charming mugs, which I just love. Then we also got a side of bacon and a blueberry & raspberry cream cheese coffee cake to share. You may say that we were a little hungry…and that our eyes were much bigger than our stomachs! I mean I wait all week for my cheat meal, so I had no shame and no regrets!
Let me start with the coffee cake. Oh-my-lord is all I have to say. This cream cheese coffee cake is unheard of and absolutely mouth-watering with every bite. The crumbly outside is moist, yet has the perfect crunch to it. Then there are the tangy flavors of the blueberries and raspberries that come through, which pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the cream cheese. The coffee cake also has a buttery taste to it that just melts in your mouth. I cannot say enough good things about this pastry! Then there was the bacon, which my mom had pushed for. I am not a huge bacon person, and it is not that I don’t like it, but it just doesn’t do anything for me. Well this bacon changed my mind. We both agreed that it was the best bacon we had ever had! It was that kind of bacon that is crispy and crunchy on the outside, but super tender when you bite in. Then there were our breakfasts, which we couldn’t believe we still had to eat haha. My Croissant French Toast was soft and delicious, but the raspberry compote really made it! My mom’s apple pancakes were also very good, and I loved that the apple added a crunch to the normal puffy texture. Sophia’s is an adorable hole-in-the-wall cafe that is perfect for a home-cooked breakfast if you are feeling too lazy to make your own some Sunday morning ;). The portions are plentiful and you will definitely leave feeling satisfied, if not more than satisfied!
